The Text Encoding Initiative

My current scholarly project is preparing online versions of texts important in the history of Lutheranism in North America. The results can be found in the Waterloo Lutheran Seminary Historic Text Archive. At present the focus is on the writings of S. S. Schmucker, the most significant North American Lutheran leader and theologian of the first half of the nineteenth century.

In this work I am using the application of XML developed by the Text Encoding Initiative, an international attempt to bring some order to the encoding of electronic texts for scholarly use.

XML, eXtensible Markup Language is used to prepare texts for cross-platform use. If you would like to learn more about XML, you should consult For more information on XML, consult the W3C XML site, Oasis Cover Pages or XML.org.

TAPoR

Currently the most complete portal for computer-aided textual scholarship in Canada is the Textual Analysis Portal for Research, TAPoR. To quote the website, "TAPoR is a gateway to tools for sophisticated analysis and retrieval, along with representative texts for experimentation."
