Welcome to WLS

WLS announces new Centre for Worship and Global Song

Since 1985, there have been more Christians in churches of the Global South than in the more affluent countries of the Global North. We often are painfully aware of the challenges and suffering in these nations but there is a vibrancy to the worship and a dynamism to their hymnody that is a gift to the whole church. Waterloo Lutheran Seminary is pleased to announce the creation of the Centre for Worship and Global Song which may serve as a bridge across cultures and between churches to help share this gift.

On February 5th, WLS hosted a benefit concert for this new Centre. Dr. Paul Helmer, a renowned pianist and Mr. Sebastian Meadows-Helmer, a violinist and a fourth year Seminarian at WLS, performed at the Maureen Forrester Recital Hall at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Pictured above, Inshallah sings a 'global song' thank you, accompanied by the Helmers.

My Story

Allen G. Jorgenson

Allen Jorgenson teaches systematic theology. Dr. Jorgenson currently serves as Assistant Dean and Associate Professor of Systematic Theology, and has been on the faculty since 2005. Allen is passionate about the significance of theological education for the formation of both clergy and laity. He remains convinced that theological thought engenders a sense of wonder and awe which informs the way we live in the world. Dr. Jorgenson is especially interested in the doctrinal treatment of Word and Sacrament. This grows, in part, out of his 14 years of experience as a parish pastor and his conviction that the worship life of the people of God serves as the primordial font for theological reflection. His recent research has focussed on the significance of Luther's sacramental theology for the public life of the church. Allen is also particularly interested in the paradigm shift evidenced in early modernity and the varying attempts to respond to its legacy in contemporary theology. Dr. Jorgenson is the author of The Appeal to Experience in the Christologies of Friedrich Schleiermacher and Karl Rahner (Peter Lang, 2007) and has most recently contributed a chapter entitled "Contours of the Common Priesthood" to The Global Luther (Fortress Press, 2009).

This year we will consider matters around worship and hospitality.  The format will include a 20 min prepared reflection on the topic by the presenter and then an open discussion.  Bring your lunch; we’ll provide coffee.
